Until very recently the entire hospital laundry was washed by hand. In 2006
two industrial washing machines were installed and have made a major improvement in the quality of the wash and the speed with which the laundry can be processed. This was a necessary development and will ensure that the laundry can cope with future growth at the hospital.
In 2007 Solar water heaters were purchased and installed. The installation was carried out by an engineer from Kampala with assistance from the site maintenance team. When the engineer inspected the Laundry roof he decided it was not strong enough to carry the weight of the three large panels full of water so some structural changes were necessary before the installation could begin.
In February 2008 an engineer from the UK completed the installation of the solar water heaters and made some modifications to the pump and filters on the re cycled water system. He also reprogrammed the machines to be able
to use the hot water and the re cycled water. This will give a very beneficial reduction in the running costs of the laundry. The machines were fully serviced and training given so that future servicing and routine maintenance can be carried out as required.
Problems have been experienced getting linen dry during the rainy season. This was not a problem prior to the instalation of the washers when the amount of laundry being washed in a day was considerably less. To overcome this problem two large industrial driers have been donated by Preston Guild Rotary Club and shipped from UK. These have now arrived and been installed, this means that the rainy season is no longer an impediment to getting all the hospital linen dried.
