Care for the Elderly

In most of Africa children are their parent’s old age pension as the children are expected to look after their parents in their old age. Until the HIV/Aids epidemic this system had worked well for centuries, but with a whole generation decimated by the disease there are many cases where the children have died and instead of being cared for the elderly find themselves responsible for their grandchildren. These old people are in the main incapable of working in the fields and the grandchildren are too young. This results in the whole family not having enough food and often little shelter.

The Kibogora Initiative set up a scheme where by around 120 elderly people meet at Kibogora once a month to chat, have a simple meal and the opportunity to make urgent needs known to staff members. Before they leave each is given 1 Kg of beans and 1 Kg of rice. A number of these elderly people will walk for 3 hours to come to this meeting which shows how much they value this opportunity.

The Kibogora Initiative is paying the medical insurance for this entire group to ensure that they can attend the hospital or regional health centres whenever they need to without fear of not being able to pay the bills. We also try to ensure that all have shelter,  this has involved re roofing or repairing a number of houses.
