Designs for the future of Kibogora Hospital now being submitted
A large team of engineers from the Engineering Ministries International organisation (www.emiworld.org) visited Kibogora in March 2011.
The EMI mission statement reads “Engineering Ministries International (EMI) is a non-profit Christian development organization made up of architects, engineers and design professionals who donate their skills to help children and families around the world step out of poverty and into a world of hope”.
The purpose behind the team’s visit is the need to have a “master plan” for the development of the hospital over the next 10 – 15 years. The demands being placed on the hospital are already greater than could have been imagined only a few years ago and are set to continue growing as the population grows and as more people are able to get access to the hospital for treatment.
In the past buildings have been erected when there was a need and funds were available. This ad hoc methodology is no longer viable as the land available for development at the hospital is extremely limited therefore a much more planned and considered approach is essential if future demands are to be met.
The Engineering ministries15 strong team consisted of surveyors, architects, electrical & drainage engineers etc. The team spent 2 weeks at Kibogora doing their initial site investigations. Since their return home to UK the team have been busy preparing designs and plans which will be presented in Rwanda at the end of September to the Ministry of Health, Kibogora Hospital management and possible funding partners.
The proposed layout is very ambitious and incorporates a few of the newer buildings but radically changes the layout and operation of the hospital. This should enable resources to be utilised much more efficiently and will mean Kibogora Hospital will be able to cope with the inevitable changes which will occur in the next 10-15 years.
The search for suitable funding partners will begin once approval in principle is agreed by the Ministry of Health and the other interested parties in Rwanda. As a result of the consultations in Rwanda there will undoubtedly be some detail changes required to the plans but hopefully this will not cause any major delays which could prevent an early start to the rebuilding programme.

The full range of the concept designs and a new 3 dimenponal presentation can be seen by visiting the “Photo Album”.

Kibogora is located in the South West of Rwanda, on the shores of beautiful Lake Kivu
